WHAT THEY DO: The Western Carolina Medical Society advocates for healthy communities, increases access to health care, fights health inequities and promotes wellness throughout Western North Carolina.
After 11 years as a political prisoner in Vietnam, I faced severe health issues, including PTSD, latent tuberculosis and heavy-metal exposure. With the U.S. State Department’s assistance, I gained humanitarian parole to the U.S. in May of 2022. Arriving with no resources, I found a vital lifeline in Western Carolina Medical Society’s Project Access. They facilitated medical appointments, health evaluations and hospital visits. They provided me with essential treatment and medications. This program’s dedication to accessible health care is invaluable.
