WHAT THEY DO: The Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation’s mission is to increase access to health care, fight health inequities and promote wellness. Our programs include Project Access®, providing health care to low-income, uninsured people; the WCMS Interpreter Network, providing interpretation to Deaf and limited English proficient people; the Dr. Charles Blair Health Scholar Fund, providing scholarships to students pursuing careers in health care; WNC Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative, providing colorectal cancer screening in Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties; and the Healthy Healer Program, supporting well-being for physicians and physician assistants.

Being able to provide care as a surgeon to patients who are underserved is a privilege. I know what it’s like to not have health insurance or access to medical care. There’s a significant need in our community of patients who are uninsured, and it’s only been made more urgent because of the pandemic.
